Why Does France Have a Veto on the UN Security Council? France was just another overrun country of Europe. Yet, it was given a veto on the UN Security Council. The Allies also permitted it to engage in military expeditions in Algeria and in Indochina, all of which contributed to the instability of the present world situation. Why was this allowed to happen? What is Indonesias views on Cuba, China, and the UN security council? I've been trying to do research on their views on all of this, but I can only find only a little bit of information. Basically what I need to know is if they are underrepresented, in the UN security council, which I am believing they are, and why, and why their views on Cuba and China are either negative and positive. Thanks for any help that you may offer!!! :-)
How successful has the UN Security council been in stopping military confrontations? there have been many military conflicts since the UN has been formed...like the US invasion of Iraq and Afghanistan, Vietnam war, the six day war between Israel and its neighbours...Russian invasion of Afghanistan...Kargil conflict between India and Pakistan...should the UN security council have taken any definite stand on these issues ?Has the Security council been a success or a failure?
should australia take a seat at the UN security council? i'm just wandering what you think? this week in a meeting with the head of the UN Prime Minister Rudd revealed his intentions for australia to run for a seat on the security council. as a proud Australian i dissagree with that as i don't think we play a big enough role armed forces wise in the worlds security. It also comes at a high cost to nominate a country.
Do you think that the UN security council is a Joke? China vetoes resolutions related to North Korea, Russia vetoes resolutions related to Iran, the US vetoes resolutions related to Israel. I would say that these superpowers are preventing the Security council from doing it's job. Would agree? What would be the best solution to this problem?
What about burma? Does the UN Security council played blind and deaf on the sufferings of the people there? The United Nations have done nothing but to send envoys in the past which resulted to nothing but sanctions. A massacre of 3000 peaceful demonstrators in 1990's, both from the religious and social classes is a clear violation of human rights and abuse of power, just recently another demonstration was quelled by force by the military junta where more than 300 were believed killed. I believe UN needs to act on these abuses and massacres by the Junta. Those happenings were clear genocides and no action but sending an envoy was done by the UN which is supposed to be the protector of the world. Was it because Burma is a tiny poor nation compared to Iraq, Afghanistan, Iran and North Korea? And nothing like oil can be siphoned from this poor country? As an ordinary citizen in your country, do you believe UN have to send its troops to Burma, unseat the junta's leaders and install an interim government just like what they did in Iraq and Afghanistan? for me it is a state-sponsored terrorism and there's not much a difference with what happpened in the countries I mentioned, Iraq, Afghanistan,Serbia -Bosnia Hezregovina, Congo, Darfur and the sort.
What are people thinking about the UN Security council cease fire resolution? And what about the Reutergate? Regardless of when a cease-fire goes into effect, it would be wise for Israeli policy makers to give serious thought already to the serious policy questions and challenges a cease-fire will present. It can be expected that Lebanon's airspace will be officially off limits to Israeli surveillance. How then will Israel be able to not only monitor Hezbollah activity after the cease-fire but also use this information in diplomatic forums without exposing itself to charges of violating Lebanon's sovereignty? How can Israel effectively exercise its right to self defense if it is attacked from Lebanon when there are third parties present on the ground? How can Israel avoid a situation in which foreign and Lebanese forces become human shields for Hezbollah? And what does Israel do if the Lebanese Army goes even beyond the role of human shield? Should Israel take a sharp "zero tolerance" approach towards violations or instead wait for them to reach a critical mass?
Who are the people that sit in the UN Security Council? i understand there are ambassadors of each country and other representatives, but do the leaders (prime ministers, presidents) always attend the Security Council meetings? If you can, please provide names of individuals and their country along with a reference. Thank you
Do you think the Security Council is the true cause of ineffective action by the UN? The UN can only be as effective as member nations allow it to be, i think the 5 nation Security Council is the biggest obstacle to it's effectiveness. Correct Opinionatedkitten, you have given the best answer so far. The idea was to solve issues before there was an escalation to violence tho. The UN has great potential to be a force for good in many International matters, the Security Council seem to have hi-jacked it as a means to further their own aims tho. Yes Dekardkain, i do believe Djibouti's vote should be as valid as that of any other nation. It should be a one member, one vote forum in my view. There are actually 10 non-permanent members of the UN Security Council, neousuperstate, they don't have veto rights and only serve for two years. I'm referring to the permanent 5 nation Security Council of Russia, the UK, China, France and the US. The system is outdated. No, no rubber stamping for me JohnFarber, i'd like the Security Council to be abolished and the UN be a one member, one vote forum. The Security Council isn't representative of the *Global City* times we live in and far too interested in pursuing their own agendas. Your answer is closest to what i'm looking for, i'll leave this post open a little longer tho.
Why is it called the UN Security Council? Koffi Annan resembles Barney Fife when he says the violence in Lebanon should stop. Grow some balls and demand that it stop, or get a coalition in there to stop BOTH factions. I don't think the phrase "Stop, or I'll say stop again" is working very well. The should be called the UN Humanitarian Council. Please don't say that the US is stopping this. If the majority of the Council supported action right now, it could be stopped. This is grandstanding at its best! I'm not saying that I'm against the war but damn, act like you have a pair. Sorry Pancakes, I love him too:o)
How many nations dominated by or controlled by Muslims are permanent members of UN Security Council? Permanent members are the only members who can veto actions by the UN. The UN is not a democratic body in that the permanent members are the only members who can actually authorize the UN to do anything. How many "Muslim nations" are permanent members of the UN Security Council? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Nations_Security_Council Thanks for the clarification, Lady, that is what I meant by permanent members control the Security Council. One veto by a permanent member kills any further action. Nay votes are counted but a veto is final. And, it only takes one.
Do you agree that the current membership of the UN Security Council permanent members is outdated? The 5 victorious nations after World War II have been in the 'elite' council for over 60 years, using and abusing their veto power during that time. Is it not about time this exclusive club open its doors to recruit other member nations and thus, reflect a true international representation? Don't the veto powers of the 5 permanent members make a mockery of the term 'democracy'? Nobody passes 'Go' if even one says 'nay', despite receiving the required number of 'ayes' from other elected members? Shouldn't the veto powers be abolished? Does the UN still serve any purpose?
Do the 5 permanent members of the UN Security Council represent the 5 books of the Torah? The permanent members are the United States, United Kingdom, Russia, France, China. The United States vetos all actions pertaining to Israel. The United Kingdom and France helped dismantle the Ottoman Empire and pave the way for the creation of Israel. Russia pulled out of Afghanistan in shame but Russia also shares a long border with China. China was victimized by the Japanese and by UK colonization and also has the highest point in the world in Mt. Everest (the border with Nepal splits the mountain in half). Just looking for some thoughts. The question is a more symbolic one rather than the obvious one regarding the 4 countries who were allies in WW II. WW II was fought 62 years ago. I didn't read any prophecies - I came up with this on my own initiative. The Ottoman Empire was dismantled in 1923 - 16 years before WW II started and 25 years before the creation of Israel. Israel keeps talking about sending its US made F-16's to Iran and bombing its facilities. The UN implores peace; The US vetos everything and the UN hasn't stopped Israel from doing what it wants (striking the Osiraq reactors in 1981).
Why does Britain have a seat on the UN Security Council? As an American I'm always amazed by how the Brits are so over represented in world affairs. How is it that a little Island nation, that cannot defend itself, is allowed to seat at the same table with the great nations of the world? Icequeen, You sit here and participate in the American bashing that the Brits are spewing and call yourself and American? Rolling eyes, sigh. :) And they have the audacity to let us take all the heat for them and then condemn us. OOOOOOOH, careful there limey boy. You don't want to pop your girdle. And since when did colonialism qualify a nation for anything but contempt? You don't have troops in Iraq either now do you? 10,000 wtf is that? Dude, The French helped us win our independence from this little island. Then they helped us defeat them again when they came back for more. Dude when are we really going to tell these colonialist bastards to bugger off?
Did the UN Security Council decide to invade Iraq? “The Security Council shall determine the existence of any threat to the peace, breach of peace, or act of aggression, and shall make recommendations, or decide what measures shall be taken.“ http://www.ontheissues.org/Archive/Rogue_States_Noam_Chomsky.htm
Would UK lose its UN Security council seat of Scotland left the Union? if Scotland left the Union, I mean (not "of") Would probably only have it currently because we were powerful back in 1945, and as no-one wants to rearrange the status quo. But if the UK is looking like splintering, it might be an encouragement towards reorganisation - the Germans, Japs, Indians might get seats instead.
MODEL UN QUESTION: security council vs. general assembly? I have been to two conferences before - they have all been General Assembly. Now, I'm going to another conference and it is going to follow Security Council procedure? It is also a crisis conference. I have no idea what the difference is. What can I expect here? What do you do on Security Council?
Should Nigeria have a Permanent seat in the UN Security Council? Most African Countries are members of the United Nations, contributing and particpating in all United Nations programmes and policies respectively but no African Country has ever had the opportunity to be part of the highest decision making body of the United Nations.
UN security council? The Council is composed of five permanent members — China, France, Russian Federation, the United Kingdom and the United States. These are also the major nuclear powers. The question is, has nuclear weapon provided peace for the last 60 years or the UN security council?
