Why Does France Have a Veto on the UN Security Council?

France was just another overrun country of Europe. Yet, it was given a veto on the UN Security Council. The Allies also permitted it to engage in military expeditions in Algeria and in Indochina, all of which contributed to the instability of the present world situation. Why was this allowed to happen? 1. Tradition. They were a world power for centuries.
  2. Because it was an infulential European power when the UN was established.
  3. because it is a world power just as the UK is.
  4. They do not want to deal with the US selfish bull crap.
  5. Better question Why was France, after the Russian kicked them out of Berlin Germany given a small section to govern by the Americans and British, The Russian called them cowards and made them go we and the Brits gave them a small section in between us,Why?
  6. Remember The French and Indian Wars. A series of Wars faught between the British and French in the years before the US became a seperate country? While they didn't win the final war, they did win a couple of them. Also, there was a little thing called the Lousiana Purchase. While they've been the butt of a lot of jokes in US Media (Ultimate Captain America, the movie "We Were Soldiers), and being overrun by Germany in WW1 & 2, they have had a very long history, spanning several centuries. This is why France, and other Eurpoean countries, have the pull they do with the UN, NATO, and other groups.
  7. Every major country on the allied side of WWII was given a permanent seat with veto powers.
