Obama bill: $845 billion more for global poverty; more of our money going out of the county?
A nice-sounding bill called the "Global Poverty Act," sponsored by Democratic presidential candidate and Senator Barack Obama, is up for a Senate vote on Thursday and could result in the imposition of a global tax on the United States. The bill, which has the support of many liberal religious groups, makes levels of U.S. foreign aid spending subservient to the dictates of the United Nations. Sen. Barack Obama, perhaps giving America a preview of priorities he would pursue if elected president, is rejoicing over the Senate committee passage of a plan that could end up costing taxpayers billions of dollars in an attempt to reduce poverty in other nations. The bill, called the Global Poverty Act, is the type of legislation, "We can – and must – make … a priority," said Obama, a co-sponsor. It would demand that the president develop "and implement" a policy to "cut extreme global poverty in half by 2015 through aid, trade, debt relief" and other programs. When word about what appears to be a massive new spending program started getting out, the reaction was immediate. "It's not our job to cut global poverty," said one commenter on a Yahoo news forum. "These people need to learn how to fish themselves. If we keep throwing them fish, the fish will rot."

- Sure, I don't watch fox news nor listen to hate talk radio, just a bunch of crap trying to make Obama look like he is King and pass off the laws by himself.
- save the poor McCain bill 5.2 trillion dollar to stay in Iraq for 100 years
- i've been saying for months what a freakin idiot this guy is.when will people learn what they put in office is becoming criminal! it's ok to spend 850 billion for these people but not to drill for oil or give us a break! what gives?
- Over ONE BILLION PEOPLE are impoverished. That is almost ONE SIXTH of the world population. If you ask me, that is a BIG PROBLEM.
- Just another wealth redistribution project brought to you by the liberals (read Socialists/Communists) in Congress. Screw the rest of the world. I get enough of my money taken for lazy, worthless people here. Now I am going to give even more to lazy, worthless people in Africa?
- no where in the bill does it state 845 Billion...it just asks the president to help fight global poverty. I am interested in where the 845 billion came from? also, the bill has never moved to the floor of the senate.
- We can't fight the causes of poverty on an international stage, but we can spend trillions on tax cuts for the rich and hundreds of billions fighting a useless war in Iraq? Ooh-kay. I can see where *our* priorities are in this day and age.
- T Boon Pickens says we spend 700 billion/yr importing foreign oil.
- what about getting our own house in order first, then if you want you can donate your money if you choose to
- Right now, it's more of China's money going out of their country to us.
- Trillions of dollars going to a war built on false information is what McCain promises more of. I go with the cost cutting measures of Obama...just give it to them, not as bullets...
- First let me say I'm so glad you are not running for any government office. What you don't seem to realize is that one of the causes of the current terror organization is prior to their coming into being many of the people around the world were envious of America and how we lived. Instead of blaming their own dictatorships they blamed us for not be more concerned about the welfare of people in other countries. By giving funds to countries we get many benefits. We get recognition as being charitable, we get cooperation when emergencies strike (Iran and nuclear weapons), we trade rights (that we can negotiate with when we have a competent leader - not Bush) and we get security because their young don't grow up to hate us for being comfortable.
- *sigh* Does he think we are wealthy? Because we're actually majorly in debt. He's ALWAYS talking about SPENDING! Does he have ANY plans to lower spending in ANY areas?!
- This is each and every year, OVER AND ABOVE the money this Country already sends to other Countries!!!!!!!!!! This Country already sends out money to needy Countries, more than any other in the World. We as taxpayers will be paying a percentage of this Country's GNP EVERY YEAR OVER & ABOVE WHAT WE ALREADY SEND OUT. LISTEN UP FOLKS, this bill gives the UN legal recourse OVER THIS NATION'S SOVEREIGNTY. It will be the first step in a true world type government should they pass this bill, the UN being the "almighty power". Read the entire bill, it also gives the UN legal power over our waters, airways and a lot of other stuff that is detrimental to this Nation's Sovereignty!!!!!!!!!!!! Contact your Politicians and let them hear your voices.
- according to the tax board. if you figure out how much each taxpayer has to pay to do that bill, it equates to $3,445 per taxpayer for the next for years. So, thats 3445 each and every year that taxpayers have added to their taxes. you trully dont believe the rich will cover this by themselves do you like obama says. LOLOL My problem with this is we have poverty here, we have people loosing homes. We have people eating out of garbage cans. I run a center for young people that have no homes. these kids arent bums. their parents are and these kids are homeless. That money could goto these type of things HERE!!! Listen to what obama said today about iran. "I will send them more money and help them get out of poverty and that will make iran become civil with the rest of the world. If we "pay" iran money, then they will not want to attck the hand that feeds them" LOLOL, ok, but who the hell will feed us!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Bill clinton was tax happy, NO WHERE NEAR what obama wants. Also, Bill kept OUR money HERE!!! His economic plan concentrated on america and 22 million new jobs were created in his 8 years. Thats because we "kept" our money! This is why obama could never get my vote. he doesnt care america. he even keeps saying "the world, the world" he doesnt say "america" anymore. He said in a speech yesterday, he wants to be the best and the ruler of the "free world" what does that say? King obama? I will be happy with someone to just rule america, not some meglomaniac who wants to rule the world on MY dime!!! He had to get beat up alot in school. You know the bully you had to give money to or he took your lunch and beat you up. Thats his policy for dealing with terrorists. Just pay them. In MY school, if you paid that bully, he would STILL beat you up AND take your lunch! THATS reality!!!
- This Global Povert Act, an Obama bill, is just the tip of the iceberg. Be sure and read the one following this on Obama and the drive for slavery reparations. Obama is not running for the presidency of the US. He wants to be the president of the globe. The following paragraph was taken from The Aim Report, the accuracy in the media. It can easily be researched. That is why I am so mistified when someone answers a question about this bill, as though it is misinformation being released by FOX News....ridiculous! The international con-nection is important and significant because an Obama bill, “The Global Poverty Act,” has recently been rushed through the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, with the assistance of Democratic Senator Joe Biden, the chairman, and Republican Senator Richard Lugar. The legislation (S.2433) commits the U.S. to spending hundreds of billions of dollars more in foreign aid on the rest of the world, in order to comply with the “Millennium Goals” established by the United Nations. Conservative members of the committee were largely caught off-guard by the move to pass the Obama bill but are putting a “hold” on it, in order to try to prevent the legislation, which also quickly passed the House, from being quickly brought up for a full Senate vote. But observers think that Senate Democrats may try to pass it quickly anyway, in order to give Obama a precious legislative “victory” that he could run on. The follow is a proof of why our taxes are going through the roof, should Obama make The White House. The AIM REPORT is shortened for the accuracy in the media. The following is fact. Obama and the Drive for Slavery Reparations AIM Report | By Cliff Kincaid | April 21, 2008 One group, the African World Reparations and Repatriation Truth Commission, is demanding an astronomical $777 trillion. Barack Obama is the most radical candidate ever to stand at the precipice of acquiring his party’s presidential nomination and the American presidency. It is apparent that he is a member of an international socialist movement which hopes to use the United Nations as a vehicle to shake down U.S. taxpayers for trillions of dollars in slavery reparations. One group, the African World Reparations and Repatriation Truth Commission, is demanding an astronomical $777 trillion. In 2001, Obama’s Trinity United Church of Christ passed a resolution declaring that: “WHEREAS: The institution of Slavery is internationally recognized as crime for which there is no statute of limitations, AND WHEREAS: Uncompensated labor was demanded from enslaved Africans and their descendants for more than two centuries on U.S. soil; AND WHEREAS: The principle that reparations is the appropriate remedy whenever government unjustly abrogates the rights of a domestic group or foreign people whose rights such government is obligated to protect or uphold has been internationally recognized…” In that same year, Martha Biondi, Associate Professor of African American Studies and History at Northwestern University, notes that the United Nations World Conference Against Racism was held. It was the result of “a decade of advocacy and organizing at the U.N. Human Rights Commission” and work by the so-called December 12th Movement. The conference issued a “Declaration and Program of Action,” which held that “slavery and the slave trade” constituted a “crime against humanity” and that “Africans and people of African descent, Asians and people of Asian descent and indigenous peoples were victims of these acts and continue to be victims of their consequences.” “The United Nations has emerged as an extraordinary stage for the reparations movement,” she says. As President, Obama could take that stage. Biondi adds that the reparations movement “offers an innovative and compelling way to move beyond inadequate and besieged civil rights discourses, to revive black-led global anticapitalist and anti-imperialist projects, and to radically intervene in the discourse of globalization.” The conference, held in Durban, South Africa, was described by supporters as “a landmark in the struggle to eradicate all forms of racism….The World Conference is a unique opportunity to create a new world vision for the fight against racism in the twenty-first century.” But the event was considered so extreme that the U.S. delegation, led by then-Secretary of State Colin Powell, walked out. A follow-up, known as Durban II, is planned for 2009. This “Durban Review Conference” would be funded through the U.N. regular budget, of which the U.S. is expected to pay 22 percent. Feel free to research the following, as well, as it was also printed material, not invented or written by me.
- You have been grossly misinformed. Sen.Obama is the sponsor of this bill and there are 23 co-sponsors, including 5 Republican senators. The bill doesn't "demand" anything. It requires the President to develop and implement a strategy to fight global poverty. In reality, this is a cheap way of stabilizing parts of the world. Here's what the nonpartisan CBO (Congressional Budget Office) had to say once it had examined the bill: "Based on information from the State Department, CBO estimates that implementing S. 2433 would cost less than $1 million per year, assuming the availability of appropriated funds. Enacting the bill would not affect direct spending or receipts." So, we're talking about less than $1million per year, which is obviously a lot less than $845billion. You can read the details at the link provided below.
- It sounds like another nice sounding bill but inside of it there are landmines. The only way to combat poverty in those countries (Africa mainly) if for those countries to support CAPITALISM.(so evil to some of you raised in bad public schools). Capitalism allows people to take risks and invests money in the most efficient manner. Most of these African or Asian countries are run by criminal demagogues. They need to overthrow the anticapitalists and install free markets.
